ROGERS #LKDSBProud'

At just 16 years old, Gino De Santis, a student of the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB), is establishing himself as one of Canada’s top emerging baseball talents. Known for his strong performance on the diamond, Gino is currently ranked #2 in Ontario for his graduating class of 2027, and his achievements continue to draw attention both locally and nationally.

Recently, Gino was selected to participate in the Prospect Games, an exclusive event that gathers some of the top baseball prospects in the country. This prestigious all-star competition provided Gino with an opportunity to showcase his skills and compete against other elite players. He also had the chance to be coached by MLB legend José Bautista, a significant moment in his development as a player.

During the Prospect Games, Gino stood out not only for his performance in the game, but also for his impressive showing in the home run derby. He was one of only eight players chosen to participate in the event, where he hit multiple home runs, including one that broke a sign at the Rogers Centre—an indication of his considerable power and skill. Such performances have elevated his status as a top prospect, and scouts have taken notice of his potential.

Gino’s growth as a player has been supported by his family and the LKDSB school community. He began his educational journey at Indian Creek Road Public School, where he received incredible encouragement and support – even after graduation. Gino, along with his family, made the decision to then move on to LKDSB’s John McGregor Secondary School. The decision to attend John McGregor was influenced by the school’s commitment to supporting student-athletes, as well as its proximity to home. The smaller school environment has allowed Gino to form close relationships with his teachers, providing him with a balanced setting to excel academically while also developing his athletic talents.

One of the most notable moments from Gino’s time at John McGregor so far, came when he expressed an interest in improving his Spanish skills to his teacher. Rather than simply recommending a course, she encouraged him to start a Spanish Club, giving Gino the opportunity to further engage with his peers and develop his leadership abilities. This experience only reinforced Gino’s belief that his school environment is one that truly cares about his overall growth, both as an athlete, a student, and as an individual.

On the diamond, Gino’s achievements continue to impress. In a recent tournament in Fort Myers, Florida, he played a pivotal role in his team’s Perfect Game—a rare accomplishment in baseball where no opposing player reaches base throughout the game. As the catcher, Gino managed the game behind the plate, calling pitches and guiding his teammates through the pressure of the event. His leadership and composure under pressure were key factors in the team’s success.

Looking ahead, Gino has already set his sights on the next steps in his baseball career. He hopes to continue playing at the post-secondary level, with aspirations of joining a Division 1 school in the United States. His long-term goal is to eventually play professionally in Major League Baseball, but he is also considering a future beyond the sport. Gino has expressed an interest in pursuing a career in physiotherapy, demonstrating his commitment to maintaining a balance between his athletic ambitions and academic pursuits.

Gino’s journey in baseball is one to watch, and his combination of skill, leadership, and work ethic have positioned him as one of Canada’s most promising young athletes. Whether he’s competing in elite events, leading his team from behind the plate, or excelling in the classroom, Gino De Santis continues to show the qualities of a future star in the world of baseball.

As Gino’s career continues to unfold, he stands as a proud ambassador of the LKDSB community. His ongoing success—both on and off the diamond—reflects not only his unwavering dedication but also the invaluable support he receives from those around him. His journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of community, in the pursuit of excellence.
